Automobile manufacturers began using the fuel injection system in lieu of carburetors in the late 1980's. Typically, the fuel injection system consists of a single fuel injector per engine cylinder plus an electronic control unit, ECU.
Certain sensor functions are monitored by the ECU, including, how far the accelerator pedal has been pushed, how fast your engine is running and how much oxygen is in the exhaust system. The ECU then signals the injectors with important information, like, the timing of the proper amount of fuel that is to be injected into the combustion chamber of each cylinder to maintain top engine efficiency.
Fuel lines can become contaminated with moisture or dirt. Your vehicle's fuel filter can help to keep out the contaminants but they can become clogged. For proper engine efficiency, it is vital to have your fuel filter replaced when it becomes clogged. ...[more]
Do I Need a New Transmission?
If your car is having difficulties shifting into gear, it is only natural to think your transmission is going out. But don't dismay - it could just be low on fluid.
Whether you have an automatic or manual transmission, the lubricating fluids must be maintained at proper levels or the transmission could slip and burn. This can eventually lead to having to pay for a rebuilt or new transmission - neither is inexpensive!
Fluid Types It is important to know that the fluid for an automatic transmission is very different than for a manual transmission. You should check your owner's manual for the fluid type, amount and frequency. Some automotive manufacturers require fluids only be checked while the vehicle is in Neutral. Be sure to check your owner's manual or look for these instructions on the transmission fluid dipstick.
Automatic transmission fluid ...[more]
Expensive to Replace!
Your vehicle's catalytic converter reduces environmentally harmful emissions caused by the burning of fuel, by converting them into vapor and less toxic gases.
The converter removes hydrocarbons (HCs) and carbon monoxide (CO) from the exhaust of your engine's operation. If a sensor becomes dirty and causes your automobile engine to run too rich (you might smell a "rotten egg" (hydrogen sulfide) odor from your vehicle's exhaust), it overworks the catalytic converter and the converter can fail.
If your vehicle has a spark plug that misfires, this may also increase HC emissions causing a converter to operate beyond its normal temperature range, and causing it to fail. Catalytic converters can get very hot and stay hot long after your engine stops. (That's why it is not a good idea to park a car on top of combustible material!)
Here at Regal Auto Care, your dealership alternative, we offer preventive maintenance services. Let us help you extend the life of your major investment. Talk to us today about setting up a PM package that meets your automotive needs!
How does preventive maintenance service protect the second most important investment a person can make (the home being the first)? We can think of several routine services that can add appreciated life to your valuable asset:
- Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) - scheduled services such as the 15,000, 30,000 and 45,000 mile services, not only keep your technicians on top of the fluid and mechanical needs of your car, they are required to maintain your warranty.
- Drive belts, brakes, valves and headlights may all need adjustment to work safely and properly. How often depends upon use.
- Frequent fluid draining and replacement, like brake fluid, cooling system fluids and power steering fluids should be checked often.
- Applying special treatments can add life to even an older investment (weather-stripping, wax coats, etc).
Purchasing preventive maintenance (PM) servicing is a conscious and informed decision based on reflection and speculation - in a sense, kind of like buying insurance protection.
Purchasing insurance is risk management: you spend your dollars with the anticipation that you WILL need coverage and the insurance company collects your dollars in the risk that you will NOT need coverage. With PM service, you are limiting the risk that it will take more dollars to repair your vehicle when (not "if") it needs repair. You are paying dollars in advance in the anticipation that you would have to spend more money on repairs later if you don't keep your vehicle in top-notch condition.
Unlike the insurance company though, the automotive repair facility is NOT offering PM servicing in the hopes that you will NOT need repairs. We all know that equipment needs to be maintained t ...[more]
